Equal Love is a nationwide campaign for same-sex marriage in Australia. Through education and direct action, we aim to change public attitudes towards lesbian and gay relationships and put pressure on the government to legislate for equal marriage rights.
Our campaign is now in its sixth year, and 2010 offers new hope for change. The federal government amended more than 80 laws to provide lesbian and gay couples the same financial and work-related entitlements as straight couples.
In doing so, they knocked down a significant political barrier to same-sex marriage in this country and sent a powerful message to conservatives that reason will prevail over prejudice.
The changes have given our movement new energy. The Equal Love campaign has been bigger than ever, re-engaging past supporters and bringing fresh faces to the cause. Everyone has a role to play in building the momentum for equality.
We look to harness new enthusiam in the community for same-sex marriage and have taken full advantage of all opportunities to debate the issue in the media, at public forums and with decision makers.
More than 10,000 Australians took to the streets as part of our national day of action for same-sex marriage, sending a clear message to our leaders that our community won't settle for anything less than equality. It was the biggest display of support for the cause in our nation's history.
We believe that all Australians should have the right to marry, regardless of their sex, sexual orientation or gender identity. Together we can and must convince our politicians that bigotry has no place in contemporary Australia.
