It can be said that gay men are more susceptible to body image ideals than straight men, and therefore more prone to eating disorders and other behaviours that can be destructive to health. While physical exercise and healthy eating are important for all people, body-building through the use of steroids and high-level workouts may be harmful.

At the other end of the spectrum, obesity is now a crucial health issue in Australia, where approximately 50% of all adults are considered overweight or obese. Being overweight can increase your risk of having heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Diet and exercise are important in avoiding or overcoming this condition, so long as unrealistic body image ideals don't lead to injury, poor health and depression.
