Centrelink Information Seminar on Same Sex Couples
On Saturday 2 May, Rainbow Visions and Centrelink partnered to present an
information seminar to explain the way that Centrelink will assess same-sex
couples from 1 July 2009.
About 25 people attended the session, which was both informative and
comprehensive. Plenty of opportunity was given to ask questions and
there were many of those.
The changes will affect many people on Centrelink benefits or those
that will apply for benefits in the future (some will be affected
negatively and some positively). A fact sheet titled Centrelink
recognises same-sex relationships is available in English and
20 other languages from Centrelink’s website at
www.centrelink.gov.au.
More specific information can be obtained by contacting Centrelink’s
Financial Information Service on 132300. You can do this anonymously
and don’t have to give your name or Centrelink number even though you
will be asked for these. It is OK to say ‘I want to remain anonymous’.
Advice from a coalition of GLBTIQ organisations who are currently
negotiating some concessions with the government is to wait until
there is more clarity about these before registering your partnership
with Centrelink.
