Gonorrhoea
There has been a large increase in the incidence of Gonorrhoea in Newcastle and in the surrounding suburbs. Gonorrhoea is a highly infectious sexually transmitted infection (STI) and it is most commonly transmitted through unprotected oral, anal and vaginal sex. Using condoms and not sharing toys during sex is the best way to prevent getting and sharing Gonorrhoea.

PEP (post exposure prophylaxis) is a 4-week course of treatment that may prevent HIV infection if you've been exposed to the virus. Treatment must commence within 3 days of the risk incident - the sooner, the better. PEP can be obtained by phoning your nearest Sexual Health Service for an appointment, or attending a Hospital Emergency Department.

Many sexually transmissible infections (STIs) are more common among gay men, and over the past few years, incidents of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea have increased among homosexually active men in NSW. Most STIs can be cured, but some (ie. herpes and genital warts) cannot. It's best to have STIs treated immediately, as this will lessen the chances of ongoing health problems.
